...that my boys like to eat ramen without cooking it first? They put it on a plate, sprinkle the fake chicken/salt flavor packet on it, then just take bites off of the brick. I don’t get it.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:26 |

I boil mine, drain it, then sprinkle on the sprinkles and eat.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:27 |

I’ve done that before. Sometimes I like eating the noodles like they’re crunchy chips or something. lol
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:27 |

I would eat the bits left in the bag while waiting for the noodles to cook
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:27 |

Yes, like a normal person. Clearly, my boyos are not normal.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:28 |

It certainly is crunchy with both of them going at it together.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:28 |

I did that when I was a teenager.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:29 |

Yeah, but teenagers are weird. So, maybe that explains everything.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:30 |

I did this as a kid. sometimes I still do, when my wife’s not watching.

welp.... they’re freaks...
freaks with good teeth and strong roofs
(i like me noodles drowned in soup)(with extra peppers)

I’ve never tried, but aren’t ramen noodles rather hard uncooked? Doesn’t seem like something enjoyable, especially since they’re so easy to cook.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:33 |

That sounds terrible. Boil some, put some diced tomatoes and an egg in. They’ll never want regular ramen again, let alone raw ramen.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:33 |

My sister used to put kraft Parmesan cheese on nutri-grain bars. Kids are weird.

They are as hard as any other noodle, but since they are so thin they are easier to crunch (I suppose). But I think what we are up against here is tweens who don’t want to have to be bothered with waiting for something to cook or having to cook it themselves.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:36 |

I do this all the time
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:36 |

They’d have to cook it themselves, so they won’t. Give a man a fish vs. teach a man to fish.

![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:36 |

I used to break up the block when still in the bag, sprinkle the flavor pack, then give it all a shake. Kinda like eating really crunchy chips.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:37 |

I’m 15 and my sister’s 13. We both do this and now my 9-yo brother is picking up on it. I showed this post to my sister and she said “they’re enlightened. They know what’s up.”
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:37 |

I concur.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:37 |

Yes this is strange, you should trade them in for new boys.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:37 |

Well, I’ve seen some of your work around here, so that doesn’t really surprise me.......

I mean, I remember being lazy as a teen (still am, TBH), but three minutes to cook ramen? I don’t get it.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:40 |

They’ll figure it out one of these days.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:40 |

It’s this and plain white rice. I won’t ever break this habit lol, my 22-yo older sister still does that stuff too.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:40 |

Plain white rice? Doesn’t that hurt your teeth?>
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:41 |

don’t question it, just be happy its nice cheap ramen.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:42 |

And that I don’t have to make it for them, or risk them setting the kitchen on fire.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:43 |

eating them dry is the mspaint of ramen
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:43 |

I did it. I liked it. LOL.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:46 |

A friend of mine lived in Poland as a kid and said his soccer teammates did this. Seems weird to me given that you can cook them in three minutes or if you want to snack on something crunchy you can find better chips and/or crackers. And make no mistake, chips probably wouldn’t be any less healthy, those ramen blocks are high-calorie, high-fat, and high-salt.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:47 |
|
I don’t do that, but what I do instead could also be considered odd. I boil my noodles, drain the water, put in some milk, cheese, and butter, and throw the flavor pack away. Basically I take a 50 cent meal and turn it into a $8 meal.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:49 |
|
I love when my kids do this. Because they get to sweep the floor afterwards.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:50 |
|
Wait, you drain your ramen? I just add the packet to the water+noodles to make noodles in broth
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:51 |
|
One of my calculus professors in college once declared (amongst many other strange things) that only drunk people eat dry ramen, so you may want to check what else they’re getting in to.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:51 |

Instant ramen was a staple in my house because my dad smoked and drank most of the grocery money. I haven’t bought any since I moved out of my parents house. Same with Scott 1000

Milk cheese and butter? That’s different. It’s the milk part I’m confused about.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 17:55 |

Yup; drain it. Then eat the noodles with the sprinkles on it.

I was all with you when I read,
my boys like to eat ramen
and then lost it when I read,
without cooking it first
I’m sorry, what? Why?
It’s simple enough. Boil water, add noodles, add the powder, stir and bring back to the boil then simmer for a few minutes.
Anything else is just not doing it properly.
It’s mind boggling that there’s so many flavours.

I have been drunk many, many times, including that year of grad school where I basically subsisted on ramen and roast beef hash. But I have never, even in a drunken stupor, eaten raw ramen.

As a college student and recently former teenager I promise I never did that. But then again our ramen noodles come in a package specifically made to be prepared in 1 min

I have to consider your own culinary proclivities when I read your comment. And remember, they are 12 years old. But yes, cooking ramen is ridiculously simple, so much so that I require them to do it themselves. Therein is perhaps the main reason that they eat it raw.
And, despite all the different flavors, my experience is that most of them taste like salt.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:14 |

I’ve been making Pot Super Noodles and Super Noodles for many years.
The genius of them is they are so simplicity.
Pot Super Noodles, you just peel back the foil lid, add water, stir and let it sit for two minutes, then eat.
They’ve even taken the Pasta N Sauce and made a pot version.
and a rice version.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:18 |

I know I’ve seen somebody else do that I just don’t remember who.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:18 |

What sort of horrible chemicals are in those, though? I’ve never seen anything like the noodles or rice dishes, but Cup Noodles have been around forever on this side of the pond.

Ramen is very versatile!

Packing lunch for them will be easy then.
12 yo boys do all kinds of goofy stuff for the attention. Eventually they’ll figure out that they don’t really like it.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:20 |

Hey, that’s a pretty good idea.
I don’t know, I think they actually enjoy it. But they are 12-y-o boys.

I don’t know about chemicals. We have rather strict laws on food.
The Pot Noodle has been around for ages but the pasta and rice version are very recent and are really nice (I don’t have any in the cupboard to take a look).
The Pasta n Sauce are lovely.

There are actually instant noodles that are intended to be eaten “uncooked”.

I used to do that, even as an adult. No flavor packet, though - just the basic Ramen. Save the flavor packet to mix with rice or something. I don’t think my teeth could take it these days. I would also eat the raw cookie dough instead of baking it. Tastes much better that way. A friend got pissed at me when he was trying to bake cookies and I said I’d take my portion uncooked.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:37 |

It might be a thing. When we were little kids, my brothers and I used to sometimes eat uncooked dried spaghetti.

Interesting. Thanks!
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:42 |

Mother’s magazines warn about raw eggs in uncooked cookie dough, or cake mixes, or brownie mixes, but I’m still here 51 years after licking many, many spoons and beaters.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:43 |

Now, I have done that, but spaghetti noodles are proper pasta. I’m not sure what these things are...
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:46 |

Chemicals?
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:50 |

Yes. At least prepare them for college by showing them how to boil water and eventually causing a dorm fire cause college.
![]() 05/10/2018 at 18:51 |

Same here. That was one of my favorite things to do when mom was baking. The commercial cookie dough is probably safe, but with everyone so paranoid about safety I bet charges could be brought up if the same thing was done today. Frigging wimps...

I think I’m more weirded out by them eating it directly off the brick than anything else, since the rest of that idea isn’t too far removed from some East/Southeast Asian snack foods.

Hm. I wonder if we could find that an international market here in Austin. I bet my boys would dig it.

Definitely worth a shot, because they’re all pretty tasty. I’ve seen them pretty regularly at most Asian markets in some form or another. If you’re ever up in Dallas, I know for sure the Mitsuwa there carries some.
